Dakine was founded in 1979 on the North Shore of Maui, Hawaii, by Rob Kaplan, who was deeply involved in the local surf scene. The brand initially focused on making practical gear that solved real problems for surfers. One of its first products was a surf leash that stood out at a time when equipment often failed under heavy conditions, and that early emphasis on function and reliability set the tone for everything that followed.

As the brand grew through the 1980s and 1990s, Dakine expanded beyond surf into windsurfing and snowboarding, following the lifestyles of the people who were already using its products.
