Rip Curl – Founded in 1969 by Doug Warbrick and Brian Singer, Australian based surf company Rip Curl initially produced surfboards, then in 1970, seeing a gap in the market, they decided to switch focus to the manufacture of Rip Curl wetsuits for surfing. The name Rip Curl is said to have come from Doug Warbrick who wrote ‘Rip Curl Hot Dog’ on a surfboard back in 1968 – the words had no meaning, but he obviously took a liking to the phrase! Over the years, Rip Curl Wetsuits grew in popularity, so in 1978 they took the company over to California to introduce to the USA market, then after being approached by a Frenchman called Yves Bessas, Rip Curl was brought over to Germany and set roots in the European surfing market. Through the years Rip Curl also joined forces with the Australian Surfriders Association to make Australias first professional surfing competition. From this Rip Curl Pro was born – still running today, and one of the most highly regarded professional surfing championships. Today.
