Rip Curl –
Founded in 1969 by Doug Warbrick and Brian Singer, Australian based
surf company Rip Curl initially produced surfboards, then in 1970,
seeing a gap in the market, they decided to switch focus to the
manufacture of Rip Curl wetsuits for surfing. The name Rip
Curl is said to have come from Doug Warbrick who wrote ‘Rip
Curl Hot Dog’ on a surfboard back in 1968 – the words
had no meaning, but he obviously took a liking to the phrase! Over
the years, Rip Curl Wetsuits grew in popularity, so in 1978 they
took the company over to California to introduce to the USA market,
then after being approached by a Frenchman called Yves Bessas, Rip
Curl was brought over to Germany and set roots in the European
surfing market. Through the years Rip Curl also joined forces with
the Australian Surfriders Association to make Australias first
professional surfing competition. From this Rip Curl Pro was born
– still running today, and one of the most highly regarded
professional surfing championships. Today. The Rip Curl empire is

was inspired by the ‘Snurfer’ (the first marketed
snowboard) and decided to modify the design and make his own Burton
Snowboards – which he made by hand, out of his garage. At
this time, ski resorts did not cater for snowboarders – so
Burton campaigned for local resorts to open their lifts for
snowboard riders and in 1982 he got his way when the Suicide Six
Resort in Pomfret was the first mountain to let snowboarders in. As
popularity grew, other resorts also opened their doors to
snowboarders and in 1985 the National Snowboarding Championships
(which became the US Open Snowboarding Championships) – owned
and operated by Burton – helped legitimise snowboarding as a
sport. Now sponsoring a number of world class professional
snowboarders, such as Shaun White, Jeremy Jones and Terje
Haakonsen, Burton Snowboards is one of the most highly regarded
snowboarding companies – manufacturing not only snowboards,
but all hardware from bindings to boots, plus mens, ladies and kids
snowboarding apparel and lifestyle apparel. Burton Snowboards and
Burton snow gear are probably our most sought after products, with
items like the Burton Custom and Custom X snowboards selling out
each season. Year on year Burton continue to advance technology on
their products – the first to use the single-channel binding
system (in 20006) which has later been copied by other snowboarding
companies – they lead the market with their features, and
continue to make headlines too for their designs – causing
controversy with their Playboy Bunny snowboards in 2008, Burton are
a company not afraid to express their creativity. The Burton empire
now includes a number of other companies, including snowboarding
protection brand R.E.D, skateboard manufacturer Alien Workshop and
more recently Channel Island Surfboards.
Mr Zogs Sex Wax –
Mr Zog is Frederick Herzog II. Who first produced Mr Zogs Sex Wax

legendary among surfers, was designed by Hank Pitcher. The slightly
controversial name gave Sex Wax popularity, and Mr Zogs Sex Wax
t-shirts and car bumper stickers spread the word of the product
– to both surfers and non-surfers. Cleverly, Mr Zog played on
this and many innuendo based marketing campaigns assisted in the PR
of the company – including the slogan ‘The best for
your stick’. It was these innuendo based slogans that got Mr
Zog’s Sex Wax advertising banned from many schools and
amusement parks – naturally increasing publicity. Mr Zogs Sex

Flow –
Flow is the number two snowboard binding company in the world. It
was founded by Neil Pryde (of NeilPryde Ltd) and Reinhardt Hansen
(formerly of F2 Windsurfing) back in 1992. At that time, snowboard
technology was still somewhat basic and in creating Flow, they saw
the need for improved snowboard binding technology. With the
assistance of product designer Werner Jettmar, they created a
snowboard binding aiming for a ‘barefoot feel’ –
with a convenient 2 strap system. The Flow snowboard binding also
features a unique, patented ‘Power Triangle’ -
formed by a steel cable that connects the hi-back to the base
plate. This Power Triangle is designed to give a more responsive
ride, by adding more force behind the binding without exerting as
much physical energy. Taking this revolutionary technology, in 1995
Flow designed a range of snowboard boots. In 1996 Flow launched
their snowboard boot and binding range to the world at the ISPO
Sports Tradeshow in Munich. In 2002 Flow also added a line of
snowboards to their product range – they have since gone on
to win a Transworld Good Wood Award. We stock a range of Flow

industry was used to. After the success of his initial product (a
prototype project between himself and Rusty Preisendorfer), he soon
had a number of other surfboard shapers on board too, including
Reynolds Yater, Robert August and Dale Velzy. The success of
SurfTech attracted a number of other world-class surfboard shapers,
including Phil Byrne, John Carper and Al Merrick. SurfTech
surfboards are unique due to their flex and painted
‘Tuflite’ finish – making the boards more durable
and much tougher than traditional surfboards. As an official
SurfTech dealer we are able to supply and order in surfboards to
customer requirements. We are also, on occasion, able to sell
SurfTech surfboards at sale and clearance prices.
