  • Spring Break Kaunertal, Austria 2016

    Spring Break Kaunertal, Austria 2016

Spring Break Kaunertal, Austria 2016 | Just when you thought its time to pack up your snowboarding kit, with all the snow clearing the peaks of Europe,  there’s always one annual trip that must be attended, the ‘Spring Break’ UK snowboard test is the last call for those final laps in the sun!

Held just an hour’s drive from Innsbruck within the Tirol valley resort of Kaunertal / Austria, lies the Kaunertal glacier awaiting the arrival of 300 folks from the UK.
Here industry riders, brands, shops staff and regular snowboarders gather to test and ride all of next season’s kit from boards, boots, and bindings as well as a whole heap of cool kit.
Now in its tenth year the ‘Spring Break’ is as memorable as ever, friends are made, good times are shared as the UK snowboard community bands together for 7 days of spring fun shredding!

Spring Break Kaunertal, Austria 2016 Mark with the Capita Defender Of Awesome 2016 / 2017

Being my third trip, I’d now like to think of myself as a ‘Spring Break veteran', I’ve shared this trip with many others, for whom too have now revisited this stunning area of Austria.
This time id brought along my friend ‘Alex’ who was visiting his first mountain range after just a few trips at the indoor snowdomes.
So I knew this trip would be really good to get a wide variety of kit tested from beginners to higher end models.

Traditionally ‘Spring Break’ is thought to feature slushy, clear riding conditions, yet due to late heavy dumps of snow after the season’s end our experience was anything but!
Experiencing every condition imaginable 3000m up was quite an ordeal, from heavy snow storms, bad visibility to a lucky clearing of sunshine breaks on our last day; we were put through it all to enjoy what was available to us.
Yet when you have just three days of riding and kit to get through, there’s no time to pack up and go home!

Spring Break Kaunertal, Austria 2016 Anon M3 Goggles

When the conditions did improve some great powder riding was had as well as the odd cheeky jib session on great little hit areas around the glacier.
With 10 runs available this isn’t about the mileage, you get on a set up and if your liking  it you might just want to spend a little more time getting to know it better… and if you don’t you’re never too far to go back up to camp and change your set up.
It was great to finally test out some kit I’d missed from this year’s order, now covering our stores whole catalogue, to give you a taste of what we’ll be having in stock for the 2016/17 season.

From brands such as Anon, Burton, Capita, G.N.U, Lib Tech, Union and Salomon, there were so many surprises and we can’t wait to share these with you soon!
Check out the edit below of what I got up to, with product reviews to come during pre-season, this is surely going to be another awesome season to look forward to!

    See you soon!!!

  • Charlies Trip to Les Deux Alpes

Charlies trip to Les Deux Alps

Any of us lucky enough to get away this January know that finding snow, decent snow would be a rarity. I can imagine all you out there weren’t too dissimilar to me leading up to your trips, sitting in front of a screen checking webcams, forecasts and reports constantly to see if you will be on mud or the white stuff.

Les Deux Alpes Les Deux Alpes

To finally get away in January after seeing reports or a proper dumping in the French Alpes, I certainly wasn’t going to complain. It was now just a matter on packing up, getting on that plane and praying for snow at the other side.

An early start, a less than fun rail replacement to Gatwick and quick nap on the plane and I had arrived in Grenoble, ready for Les Deux Alpes. The runways were white, the freezing level had dropped down to pretty much sea level and talks around the transfer that the regulars have not seen this much snow this low in years, things were sounding good.

Les Deux Alpes Les Deux Alpes | Burton Process Flying V & Burton Mission EST Bindings

By the time our slightly sore heads hit the slopes Sunday morning we were greeted by high winds, super low temperatures and fresh snow getting blown from piste to piste, maybe this was too good to be true. The plan was to get to the top glacier, get on the friendliest runs to get our eye in and check out the 10km Jandri run back into the main resort. Jumping in the gondola to 3200m, chalked on the board was the weather report: 70-90kmph winds and -19C, very inviting. Exiting the building at the top, one of the boys skiing got blown a good 20ft over hard snow by the gales and I walked out clinging to the board like I was walking out for a session at the Hot Pipe one windy morning in Shoreham. The decision was made, get a bit lower and out of the face-mask freezing blizzard and into the blue skies. A tiring day finished off with some icy runs back to resort but all in all, a fair first day to the week.

I was on a Burton Process 152 Flying V for the short time I was out there, but found the board easy to float around on but not quite a hard edge to edge board. It had a mid flex feel to pop around the park on smaller kickers without getting bucked off onto your arse from loading it up to much.

The Burton Missions EST ride with a mid soft feel and can really lock you boots in to get a better response. The ankle strap has a smart little kink in the plastic to fold the strap out of the way to get your boot in without the hassle. These bindings can be paired with a range of boards, it has a fairly stiff high back but it is alongside a softer feel underfoot.

Now you might be hoping I don’t go through this blog with day to day updates on snow conditions, weather and what I had for lunch, I won’t put you through the boredom as time on the slopes was short lived for a second time in my visits to the Alpes.

Les Deux Alpes | Charlie Les Deux Alpes | Charlie

Sun was shining and a bluebird was on the cards for the second day, we found our way up through the gondolas to the glacier and made the most of the wide gentle runs at the top of the mountain. Stoked after exploring more of the mountain, we stopped off for lunch and a few beers by the park ready to head up there after. The snow park was showing signs of life as the boys were out setting up new rails and larger features (always worth scoping it out nice and early.) A few runs done on the Boardercross and hitting the kickers of the side track and we were content with what it had to offer.

Long story short, I didn’t land the triple-cork McTwist 360 flip / frontside 180 and rolled over onto my toe edge and crushed my buckled knee and heard a lovely crunching pop sound. Before I knew it, the piste rescuer was down with me saying he will get me on the sledge and ski me down to the parks dropzone and I will be taking a site seeing tour via chopper back into resort….. time to use that insurance.

Now the exciting part of trip was over, time to get prodded by an old French doctor and a quick diagnosis and impending order to rest and basically have no fun for the rest of the week. It was nice to slowly explore the town during the clearest blue sky weeks I’ve seen in the mountains was gutting, but I soldiered on through to one of the boys 24th birthday which consisted of stumbling, limping, hobbling around Smithy’s Tavern fitting in with other boozy Brits and a late one in Avalanche.

Now time for the road to recovery after cartilage and ligament damage to get back out next year on some nice easy blue runs.

It's that time of year. Two member of our team headed out to La Clusaz to the Snow Avant Premiere to have a nose around what products the brands of the snow world had in store for the 2016-2017 season.
This year the weather wasn't too kind with high winds causing a fair bit of chaos resulting in the mountains being shut. The last day (12/01) saw kinder weather allowing for some testing to take place!

Bills Snowboarding Trip | Megève Ski Resort , French Alps - February 2015

One of our team at OceanSports has recently skived off work for a week to Megève in the French Alps. Not only was it bluebird the whole week, we managed to get our hands on next year’s Burton custom for him to shred!

megeve_ski_resort Megève Ski Resort, French Alps

Bill came back in the store stoked out his mind about Burtons Flying V board and Bonfire Tanner Jacket he was fashioning saying,"It was outrageous loving the moguls (a bump of snow) of course, a very quick edge change and the flying 'V' just tears through tight turns making terrain such as the trees and steeps seem like green runs, when its dumping the rockers sits so sweet on top."

The Tanner jacket has a fine tailor fit in a rich stretch Oxford fabric which is great for providing freedom to move and keep you dry, along with its fleece lining that’s super warm!

Bill | Megève Ski Resort, French Alps Bill | Megève Ski Resort, French Alps

His trip sounded quite eventful, spending the first two days at a family’s home, praising a nutritious organic breaky and the only problem being, a 50 minute train then coach journey from Megève.

Bill | Megève Ski Resort, French Alps Bill | Megève Ski Resort, French Alps

Next Bill moved in to a hotel right bang next to the lifts for a further six days, however not without difficulty at the train station! “You’d think they'd run a bus for every train arriving on one of the busiest weeks of the season, but no! After finding out we had two and a half hours to wait when we wanted to be on the slopes, we decided to hitchhike on the entrance to the mountain road using a cardboard sign. We held out for 15 minutes before getting picked up, we were super lucky I don't think my snowboard would have fitted into someone's two seater Maserati!"

Bill | Megève Ski Resort, French Alps Bill | Megève Ski Resort, French Alps

In all Bill said it was the best week he's spent riding with great weather and good snow plus, a very cheeky free hotel. The board images are still under wraps so enjoy these sneak peaks of what the 2016 season has in store on us.

  • Mark Teti (Ocean Sports Staff) Snowboard Trip

Ocean Sports staff Mark Teti recently head out Morzine for a week's full on snowboarding. Here's his report back to camp....

I recently took the opportunity to visits some friends in the Snowboarding Mecca of Portes du Soleil in France. This was a new experience for me, in a resort 60% full of British seasonaires and also known as a ‘hotspot’ for UK pros in training, due to its vast area of multiple resorts!

    Mark Teti Snowboarding Mark Teti

Admittedly, this was a week spend way out of my comfort zone! Usually lapping various parks, I was awoken to plentiful areas of powder due to a wicked snowfall throughout my time, riding popular areas such as Le Gets 'Neon' peak as well as a wide range of tree runs. A unique area for drops was in 'Chatel', with all it’s rolling terrain of powder it was great jibbing fun for all to share!
