Inflatable SUP or Hard Board – that’s the question..?

Buying an inflatable stand up paddle (SUP) board primarily should not be seen as a compromise on performance, quality or aesthetics. Inflatables
are far outselling hard boards in the UK because of some serious practical benefits that don’t leave you feeling like you are missing out on some hard board fun.

    Transport

Having to transport an inflatable SUP consists of a few simple options, chuck it on your back, wheel it down to the water, put it in the boot of your car or cycle down wearing it like a rucksack. The ease of getting from home to the beach with an inflatable is massively different to the hassle of a larger hard SUP board and is one reason why these are a perfect SUP
    board.

These boards love to travel, the board deflates and rolls up into the wheeled bag for ease of transit. The Red Paddle Bag has been specifically designed for airline regulations and the bag can take the board, pump and paddle and still weigh in at under 20kg, again under most airlines weight restrictions.  Red Paddle have thought of everything…

So when you book your summer sun, just add an extra suitcase and now you can Paddle board around the world!

    Setting up

Pump and go time for an inflatable is super quick….fact. With the new Red Paddle Co Titan 2 cylinder pump you can have your SUP inflated and
on the water with 8-12 minutes at a leisurely pace. This pump is the best in the business and can get that board inflated to the desired PSI in no time for a cruise or surf.

    Storage

If you own an 11ft hard SUP board then it will always be 11ft, the travel bag that the Red Paddle inflatable comes in can live under the stairs, corner of the garage or keep it in the boot of the car so you are always ready. These options make paddle boarding way more accessible for people without outdoor or garage storage, as all you need is the same space as a suitcase.

Also you don’t have to deflate every time you use your board if you can get to and from the beach or storage is not an issue – just leave it inflated for the season and deflate when the weather turns… We have had customers that have never deflated their boards since the day they bought them.

    SUP Family and Kids

The nature of an inflatable board is to sit higher in the water and have more buoyancy, which means they are perfect for the family as a couple of kids can go out on the water, you can take the kids out or even the dog! The soft and super durable construction is suited for kids, rather than the unforgiving construction of a hard board, the last thing you want to happen is the kids getting bonked on the head with a hard board. There isn’t any need to be so precious with an Inflatable SUP on land either, whereas hard boards can easily get dinged on hard surfaces if the kids get hold of them!

    inflatable-sup-board-guide

Durability – How strong is an inflatable board..?

We think these boards are bomb proof..! Red Paddle have thrown one off a warehouse roof just for it to laugh at them and bounce around. After this attempt they had a cherry picker drive over it and still nothing. To
date we have not had one return in the shop from the last few years of
stocking, selling, paddling and loving these inflatables. These indestructible boards are perfect for a long term purchase for the entire family to go and use without any worry.

With an inflatable board sitting a little higher in the water,  if you go for a board with that little extra volume for the family, then they are perfect for a couple of kids to go out on the water or take the kids out with you.

So why only Red Paddle Inflatables Boards

Red Paddle are a British Company based in Devon – we have backed them from the outset. They pioneered inflatable boards from day one so they
made the mistakes back in the day that some leading brands are still making today. Clever innovations like the 15% lighter MSL construction, wheeled travel bag, the amazing Titan pump to all products being designed for airline travel make them always one step ahead of the rest and especially suited to what the UK market wants.

I’ve seen a much one cheaper on Ebay…

With the phenomenal success of inflatable paddle boards many factories in the Far East that make other inflatable products have jumped on the band wagon and started producing SUPS, they look similar and feel similar – its only when you try one you will realise the difference. One way of making an inflatable SUP cheaper is to use one single layer of construction – this reduces weight, durability but also stiffness which means it will be like standing on a banana as soon as you are on the water and it could be easier to puncture.

In our opinion there are two types of paddleboards cheap ones and decent ones and nothing in the middle is worth the compromise – We all
    ride Red boards too!

  • The Roxy Fitness Challenge

Yoga and surfing go hand in hand and with paddleboard becoming evermore popular, yoga and paddleboarding go hand in hand too!  The 16th July saw Roxy and a fair few yoga, paddleboarding and running enthusiasts descend on Fistral Beach for the Roxy Fitness Challenge.

We caught up with Oceansportgirls instagram follower Agne who attended the event to see just why she took part and the benefits gained from being involved in such sports

What made you want to take part in the event?

There is something thrilling about the start of something new. It challenges the mind! The Roxy Fitness Challenge event is all about uniting girls across the globe and celebrating living an active lifestyle. It means all ages and fitness abilities souls are speaking one physical language. It creates a magical atmosphere, inspires physically, emotionally and I wanted to be a part of it. Trust me, its remarkable ;)

    roxy-fitness-challenge Roxy Fitness Challenge

Do you take part in Yoga, Running, or Paddleboarding and if so why?

All people are different and that is amazing, it makes us unique and special. But I tend to fall into the "easily bored" category, so my physical routine consists of mixing up yoga, running, group exercises or long walks. I was lucky to have the opportunity to practice yoga with local teachers and founders.  I particularly enjoy outdoor yoga, being in such beautiful surroundings, it's like the sun, wind and sound of the ocean takes you to the only place where life exists at that present moment.
Running for me is “need to think" time, time when I can reflect on what has happened during the day and a time to let things go.  At the Roxy Fitness Challenge event, I took part in yoga and running. I'm impressed with paddleboarding but haven't tried myself yet. It's on my TO DO list!

    roxy-fitness-challenge Roxy Fitness Challenge

What advice would you give to other women wanting to take part in Paddleboarding, Yoga or Running?

I think it's important to keep your mind stimulated, clear your mind and help you to see the bigger picture from a different perspective. A yoga mat is the safest place to succeed or fail, but you have to be open for that, open to falling and getting back up whether its physically or emotionally. Every woman should honor their bodies with these activities; all they have to do is show up and try their best. Grow and most important have fun!

Cliff Cox our team rider and the Brighton Crew have just got back from another epic trip to Morocco – Cliffs not a man of many word

    Cliff Cox Cliff Cox

We arrived at Anchor Point to our usual house on the beach, just a stone’s throw from the paddle out spot – this was my twenty second year at the Point. It was great to catch up with my many Berber friends the local people of Morocco.

The waves were pumping and the sun blazing, we had arrived in heaven. The tides were high so we had to wait for the dawny the next day before we could get in and surf.

    Cliff Cox Cliff Cox

We awoke to freight train right handers and no wind, the boys were straight on it. It was great to be in the water with the boys - the crew were just close mates this year, whereas most years I would also guide or train groms.

    Cliff Cox Johnty amd Mohamid

The trip was eventful, amazing waves, broken boards, cut feet and a few half drownings never a dull day on the “Point”.

Nights were filled with beers, food and the amazing starry skies - no light pollution in Morocco.

  • Guide to a Summer Wetsuit

A Guide To Your Summer Wetsuit

It looks like the warmer weather is coming and with the school holidays not too far away now either, some of you may be lucky enough to be heading west to Cornwall for a week or two! (jealous!)
One of the main things that is a must on a holiday regardless of where you are is getting into the sea and have a go at Bodyboarding or surfing.
So we thought we would give you a heads up on what might be ideal for our dear English sea. Below you will find a few wetsuits and bits and bobs that we have picked out and are quite popular amongst our customers and staff to make your time away that bit more awesome!

What Does The 3/2mm Of Wetsuit Mean?
All wetsuits we have picked are 3/2mm wetsuits ideal for the summer months. What does this mean you’re probably thinking? It simply means the 3mm part is the thickness in millimetres of the neoprene around the core of your body to keep your organs warmer. The 2mm area covers your legs and arms. The reason for the difference in thickness is simply so the thinner neoprene offers more flexibility so you can carry out the sport in hand with ease of movement.

    Childrens
Starting with the kids, we have a wide range of colours for the O’Neill Reactors, both in  shorty and full length suits. These offer a full dose of performance for a great value with technology such as FluidFlexTM (improving the movement in the shoulders and sleeves), and an adjustable super seal neck with a YKK back zip to keep the water out and you warm. These suits are an ideal entry suit for anyone that wants to get in the water!

Some of the O'Neill Reactors Avaliable O'Neill Kid Reactors

    Toddlers
Sunsuits for toddlers are perfect for wearing on the beach and dipping between the rock pools. They even offer UV protection so just like a rash vest would,  their skin is protected. With a back zip entry, they are a no hassle suit and won’t irritate. These are made out of neoprene and don’t offer the same warmth as a wetsuit would, but are a great all round suit. It’s ideal to get an O’Neill Toddler Reactor if you intend to head into the sea, these are 2mm thick and provide a bit more warmth.

    Men’s
If you’re likely to give surfing a go then the Rip Curl Dawn Patrol is ideal. This suit is available in a chest zip or back zip style. Again another high quality suit for a great price. These suits are ultra-light with Rip Curls E4 neoprene offering all the stretch you need in the right places!  A great feature is the batwing system, this has been designed to combat those coldwater flushes (water entry) and get rid of the water so you can surf for longer without getting colder quicker.

    Women
Finally ladies, there is the Womens O’Neill Bahia 3/2mm wetsuit. This suit was designed for those which wanted to bring beauty personality and confidence to the water. This suit is 100% super stretchy and has flatloc stitched seams so water can move in and out discreetly and most importantly keep you warm!

All full length suits mentioned above have the right padding and support that your knees need to protect them from friction against the sand, pebbles or your board.

  • Oi Rio Pro 2015 Low down

Last week, you may or may not have been gluded to your screens to watch the Oi Rio Pro 2015 at Barra Da Tijuca.  What a week it was with the masses gathering to see some of the world’s finest surfers battling it out in the water for that all important spot.

The men’s surfing saw Filipe Toledo from Brazil go head to head with Bede Durbidge from Australia.

Filipe Toledo - Oi Rio 2015 Champion Oi Rio 2015 Champion, Filipe Toledo - Courtesy of WSL

Toledo managed to score a perfect ten with a no grab air-reverse and later a 9.87 to secure his win, bearing in mind the maximum score possible is 20, they definitely put on an awesome final with Durbidge scoring a few 7’s along the way too! Toledo was so grateful by the support on the beach and rightly so for a home country win! This leaves him second in the rankings with 25,700 points!

Crowds at Oi Rio Crowds at Oi Rio Pro - Courtesy of WSL

In particular the women’s event was exciting with Stephanie Gilmore (reigning champ) absent from the contest with a leg injury, this gave a great chance for Tyler Wright, Courtney Conlogue and Carissa Moore (to name a few) to make their way through the heats and into the quarter finals. We saw Carissa Moore do well in here rounds but was defeated in the semi-finals against Bianca Buitendag where Buitendag scored a total 13.50 taking her through to the finals.

Oi Pro 2015 Champions - Courtney Conlogue and Filipe Toledo - Courtesy of WSL Oi Pro 2015 Champions - Courtney Conlogue and Filipe Toledo - Courtesy of WSL

Wright and Conlogues semi-final wasn’t easy either, with the conditions of surf being small it was tricky to really showcase their talents. None the less they made do with what was available and fought through it to see Conlogue win her semi-final with a score of 13.50.
Having won the Women's Drug Aware Margaret River Pro, Conlogue managed to score 7.17 and 7.33 waves in amongst the final helping to boost her score and go on to win the Oi Rio Pro 2015.
Thus helping her increase her ranking position with 31,700 points putting her second on the board.
With Moore and Conlogue having two wins each this year already (Carissa Moore; Roxy Pro Gold Coast and Rip Curl Women’s Pro Bells beach), Courtney is definitely one to watch as she moves up the rankings!
The next stop is the Fiji Pro at the end of the month (May 31st ).
