Of Australian origin, the Billabong brand was founded in 1973 by surfboard shaper Gordon Merchant and his partner. By the 1980’s, the Billabong surf brand had established a great reputation in Oz and expanded through to the North American market. Due to the massive growth of the surf industry in the 1990’s, the Billabong brand became one of the most reputable and influential surfing brands worldwide. Expanding into other boardsport markets including Billabong Snowboarding and Billabong Skateboarding, eventually by the mid 2000’s the Billabong family grew to acquire more brands under its wing, including Von Zipper, Nixon Watches, Dakine, Element and more.
